    • Brief biographies of "radical" individuals, groups, and movements of the 20th century from political, environmental, and peace movements, labor, education, civil rights movements, and more.  Includes U.S. and Europe and abroad.  Some of the rebels included are: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, George Orwell, Earth First!, Sacco-Vanzetti Case, Amnesty International.

    • Biographies of 68 people & 7 organizations considered 'movers and shakers' as activists and organizations.  Entries provide thorough bibliography of sources for more reading.  Some entries included are: Black Panther Party, Cesar Chavez, Malcom X, Abbie Hoffman, Ernesto Che Guevara, Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Ralph Nader.

    • Provides biographies, analysis, background information and summaries of the many facets of violence in American culture. Entries include: Ted Bundy, Civil Rights Movement, Civil Disobediance. Follow "See Also"

    • See Additional Sources in Vol. 4
    • Background information, significant factors, and summaries of different points of view on many current & social issues.  Entries include: Civil Disobediance, Community, Revolution, Protest Movements, Public Opinion, etc.
  • Propaganda and Mass Persuasion: A Historical Encyclopedia -- 303.375 CUL
  • Summary entries on the history of propaganda in countries, social movements, war, and methods of communication including specific films.  Sample entries include: Osama bin Laden, the CIA, posters, Reefer Madness, etc.  Entries includes a bibliography for more readings.
  • The Turbulent 60's -- 973.922 T931 Each volume covers one year of the 1960's and includes numerous scholarly articles on a current issue of the year.  End of each volume lists suggested readings.

  • Bring a print out of the book you want to the front desk of the library.
  • Allow up to two weeks (average is one week) for the materials to arrive.

Have a citation for an article?

  • Search for the title of the journal in Serials Solutions to see if the full text is available in one of our databases. 
  • If the full text is not available bring the citation to the front desk of the library.  They will get the article from another library.

  • Scholarly articles from journals, magazines, and newspaper reports.
    Hint: Make sure you click on the Academic Journals tab!!
  • Try a Subject Guide Search and use the Subdivisions to narrow your topic.
    • Hint: use only one very broad term Example: propaganda.
    • Add additional terms in the Search box on the left side of the screen.

OR

Try an Advanced Search and search for terms in the Abstract field.
  • Hint: use the pull down menu.
  • Search for more than one term at a time.
  • Put each term on a different line.


Academic Search Premier

  • Scholarly articles from journals and magazines.  Includes book reviews.
    • Type in a broad topic, add "AND" and an aspect of the subject that interests you.
    • Use "quotation marks" to search for phrases.
      • Example: "vietnam war " AND protest Once you have a results list, Narrow By Subject
    • Choose Academic Journals to eliminate magazine and newspaper articles.

 

New York Times Archive Online

  • Search the NY Times archive from 1851-1980  (1851-1922 is accessible in full text. 1923-1986 is abstract only. 1987-present is full text).
    • Hint: Use the pull down menu on the Home Page to search the years 1851-1980.
